Young Carers

At Elm Tree Primary, we are committed to recognising and supporting young carers.

A young carer is a child under the age of 18 who helps to look after a family member who has a disability, long-term illness, mental health condition, or difficulties with drug or alcohol misuse. Caring responsibilities can include practical tasks such as cooking, cleaning, shopping; providing emotional support, helping with younger siblings, or taking on additional responsibilities at home.

Recent research suggests there may be as many as 800,00 young carers (aged 4 – 18) in the UK, with many not understanding they are a young carer and families not always identifying themselves as needing support. We understand that caring responsibilities can affect a child's wellbeing, attendance, friendships, learning and emotional health, and we are here to help.

How We Support Young Carers

We have a designated member of staff who has the responsibility for Young Carers. Mrs Baker is the Young Carer lead and liaises with parents and relevant support services such as Suffolk Young Carers.

We provide a safe, caring and understanding environment for our Young Carers. Mrs Baker runs a fortnightly Young Carer club at lunchtimes. These ensure our young carers feel connected, supported and recognised.

We offer flexibility and understanding where caring responsibilities impact school life.

We ensure young carers have the same opportunities to learn, achieve and enjoy school as their peers.

Support Beyond School

There are a range of organisations that provide advice, information and support for young carers and their families, including local Young Carers services.

More information can be found on the Suffolk Young Carers website. Click on the link Suffolk Family Carers.

How Parents and Carers Can Help

If your child helps to care for someone at home, please let us know. Sharing this information allows us to understand their circumstances and provide appropriate support. All information will be treated sensitively and in confidence.

You can speak to a member of school staff including:

· Your child's class teacher

· Our Designated Safeguarding Lead and Young Carer Lead (Mrs Sarah Baker)

· The school office

If you think your child may be a young carer, please get in touch. We are here to listen, understand and work with you to ensure your child receives the support they deserve.
