Writing
Writing at Elm Tree Primary School
At Elm Tree Primary School, we are committed to developing confident, enthusiastic and skilled writers. We secure strong foundations through dedicated, timetabled lessons in spelling and handwriting, ensuring that pupils develop the transcriptional skills needed for successful writing.
We foster a love of writing by immersing children in high-quality texts that inspire, engage and provide strong models of language and structure. Writing opportunities are carefully planned to include a balance of fiction and non-fiction, creating meaningful links across the curriculum and ensuring coherence in children's learning.
Our writing lessons follow a structured approach that explicitly teaches both transcriptional and compositional skills, enabling pupils to develop accuracy, creativity and authorial confidence. A strong emphasis is placed on vocabulary development, encouraging children to make ambitious and purposeful word choices that enhance their writing.
Children are supported to become reflective writers through daily focused editing, where they learn to evaluate and improve their work. Through this approach, we aim to equip every pupil with the knowledge, skills and passion to communicate effectively and write with confidence for a range of purposes and audiences.
