Music

At Elm Tree, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to enjoy, create and perform music. At the heart of our music curriculum is a passion for singing together, enabling children to develop confidence, expression and a sense of belonging through shared musical experiences. 

Pupils develop their singing, instrumental and listening skills while exploring a wide range of musical styles, traditions and cultures. Through their learning, children gain an understanding of key musical concepts such as pulse, rhythm and pitch, whilst developing their creativity and performance skills. Regular opportunities to perform help to build confidence and foster a lifelong appreciation and enjoyment of music. 

Our music curriculum is built upon the CUSP Music framework, which provides a strong foundation of musical knowledge, understanding and skills. We enrich this curriculum through a variety of practical musical experiences, including whole-class instrumental tuition such as ukulele lessons in Year 4. 

Singing and being together are at the heart of our love for music. Weekly singing assemblies provide every child with the opportunity to develop their confidence and enjoyment of singing, while a range of choir opportunities allow pupils to perform and further develop their talents. Classes regularly sing at our Family Picnic, and the Year 6 musical theatre production is a much-anticipated highlight of the school year, showcasing the creativity, teamwork and musical achievements of our pupils. 

Through these experiences, we aim to inspire every child to see themselves as a musician and to develop a lasting love of music that extends beyond their time at Elm Tree.
